How many first aid personnel do I need?

This is dependent on the number of employees your business has and the risk level (low-risk/medium to high risk) of the environment you operate within.

First Aid personnel for low-risk environments

These are environments where workers are not exposed to hazards, such as

num-1

Office

num-2

Libraries

num-3

Shops

For low-risk environments this table can act as a guide.

No. of companiesNumber of first aid personnel (minimum)
Fewer than 251 Appointed person
24 to 501 EFAW trained first aider
50+1 FAW trained first aider per 100 people (or part thereof)

It’s important to note that this only to be used a guide and is not a recommendation. In low-risk environments, the risk level increases as the number of employees increase. A thorough risk assessment should be conducted to evaluate the individual need of your business.

First Aid personnel for mediumto high-risk environments

The HSE recommends higher numbers of first aid personnel for more hazardous workplaces. Such as:

num-1

Forestry

num-2

Agriculture

num-3

Construction

num-4

Catering

num-5

Engineering

For medium to high-risk environments this table can act as a guide.

No. of companiesNumber of first aid personnel (minimum)
Fewer than 251 Appointed person
24 to 501 EFAW trained first aider or 1 FAW trained first aider, depending on the types of injuriesthat may occur
50+1 FAW trained first aider per 100 people (or part thereof)
