How J. Heebink Solved Their Driver Shortage and Gained a Competitive Edge Using HGVC.

J. Heebink

“We recently used the HGV Skills Bootcamp scheme to upskill several of our warehouse employees into driver roles, and we couldn’t be happier with the results. Thanks to HGVC and the HGV SkillsBootcamp programme, we’ve been able to stimulate growth in our company, and we look forward to working with HGVC again in the future.”

Introduction

J. Heebink is a leading logistics company with a history spanning over 100 years. Its mission is to provide safe and fast transport services to its clients. Specialising in international transport, warehousing, and distribution of goods, the company values longterm partnerships and strives to build them through its commitment to quality and customer satisfaction.

Situation

J. Heebink operates and manages a large fleet nationally and internationally, which requires a large number of qualified HGV drivers. As such, continuous HGV licence training is needed to ensure the company’s driver base is able to meet its growing requirements.

Challenge
  • Heebink was struggling to attract and retain drivers, putting a strain on their operations and affecting their ability to meet their customers’ needs.
  • The high cost of training and the use of agency drivers was not sustainable. They needed a more cost-effective and efficient way to ensure they had enough drivers to meet demand.
  • It was clear that they needed to find a more effective way to train their drivers and help them succeed in obtaining their licenses.
Solution

J. Heebink used the HGV Skills Bootcamp scheme for cost-effective HGV licence acquisition, allowing more candidates to obtain licences without financial strain. This strategy boosted driver numbers and reduced the operational impacts of staff shortages. With many more qualified drivers, J. Heebink was able to focus on the delivery and growth of its own Transport, Warehousing, and Customs Services. HGVC upskilled a large number of Heebink employees, greatly relieving the stress on the company’s own training team.

Result
  • 2 drivers trained to a category C+E licence, saving the business nearly £10,000.
  • An improved capability to provide high-quality services to customers – crucial in helping to meet demand during busy periods.
  • J. Heebink now has weekend availability for its logistics package, which has helped to better meet customers’ demands and gives the organisation a competitive edge in the marketplace.
  • Thanks to the HGV Skills Bootcamp scheme, the organisation is proud to have invested in its employees at a fraction of the cost of funding training commercially.
